The SAGrid Joint Research Unit
SAGrid is a federation of institutes, research units, laboratories and other groups which provide computing resources to the users. Sharing resources in an ad-hoc way can lead to abuses and unfair usage, which is why a Joint Research Unit (JRU) has been formed as an expression to collaborate at a technical level and formalise the agreements necessary to share resources in a federated manner. The JRU is a management body, currently formed by the
- The University of the Free State (Computer Services)
- The University of Johannesburg (IT Services Department)
- North West University (IT Services)
- The University of the Witwatersand
- iThemba Laboratory for Accelerator-Based Sciences
- UCT-CERN Research Centre, University of Cape Town
- University of Cape Town (ICTS Department)
- Meraka Institute (CyberInfrastructure Programme)
These are the institutes which provide the bulk of the computing resources on the grid, and have historically supported the project, through the ASAUDIT HPC SIG, or other associations. The JRU however is an open agreement with clauses for entry of new sites. This is a non-binding document with no legal status, but is the precursor to a South African National Grid Initiative (NGI) which will be formed in the future.
